Belper, Amber Valley, Derbyshire

Belper is a small Town and Civil Parish in the local government district of Amber Valley, Derbyshire.

Until Jedediah Strutt came to Belper in 1776, it was a small town well known for producing Nails. These quality nails were used throughout the world. If your surname is Naylor then it is most probable that your family originate from Belper.

Those in search of a bargain should seek out the Amber Valley's many factory shopping outlets, renowned as some of the best in the UK, including the excellent Denby Pottery Visitor Centre. As well as it's famous factory shop, the Centre also offers pottery and glass studio tours and the award-winning Cookery Emporium.

Belper is also famous for its mills, today only the North and East mills remain, The East mill was built by the English Sewing Cotton Company in 1912.
The North mill is open to the public and you take a tour round this building. You can have a guide or use the magic wands for commentary.

For a great day out why not take the seven-mile steam train ride through the stunning Amber Valley countryside at the Midland Railway - Butterley. Set in 35 acres of country park, the collection includes restored locomotives and rolling stock, displays of farm and factory machinery, a miniature railway, model railways and much more.
