Ashbourne, Derbyshire Dales

Ashbourne is a small market Town in the Derbyshire Dales and is known as 'The Gateway to Dovedale'.

Ashbourne is known for its annual two-day Royal Shrovetide Football Match, in which one half of the town plays the other at football, using the town as the pitch and with the goals three miles apart. As many as several thousand players compete for two days with a hand-painted, cork-filled ball. It is a moving brawl which continues through the roads of the town, across fields and even along the bed of the local river.

Ashbourne's market takes place every Thursday and Saturday throughout the year, continuing a tradition that dates back to 1257. Its medieval streets, historic buildings and main street, widely considered the finest street of Georgian buildings in Derbyshire. The town is renowned for its excellent range of shops – clustered around the historic market place and along the main streets, you'll find everything from independent ladies' boutiques and fine antiques shops to speciality food stores, galleries, bistros, gift shops and much more.

The Tissington Trail, a popular recreational walk and cycle path, starts at Mapleton Lane on the northern outskirts of town. Not only does Ashbourne offer lovely walks and pretty scenery but it has many lovely places to eat and drink and offers some great accommodation.

And for the more adventurous, Ashbourne is not far from Britains most famous theme park - Alton Towers, making it an ideal base to explore from.
